About the Author

Meet Morgan Rhodes, a writer based in Ontario, Canada. As a child, she had a dream of becoming a princess – the one who could rescue kingdoms and princes from the dangers of fire-breathing dragons and dark wizards with her sword skills.

However, she ended up becoming a writer, which she thinks is just as great and less risky. Apart from writing, Morgan loves photography, traveling, reality TV, and reading books of all genres (although she is very particular about her choices).

She has authored many paranormal novels under a different pen name and has become a national bestselling author. Falling Kingdoms is her debut high fantasy novel.

Editoral Review

A Book of Spirits and Thieves by Morgan Rhodes is a gripping fantasy novel that transports readers to a world of magic, power, and mystery. The author, Rhodes, is a Canadian writer who is best known for her bestselling series, Falling Kingdoms.

In this novel, Rhodes explores the world of her previous books more deeply and introduces new characters and plot twists. Set in modern-day Toronto and the ancient kingdom of Mytica, A Book of Spirits and Thieves follows two separate storylines that eventually collide.

The first storyline revolves around a group of teenagers who uncover a mysterious book that has the power to transport them to an alternate dimension. The second storyline takes place in the ancient kingdom of Mytica, where a young sorceress struggles to restore her family’s lost magic and take her place as queen.

Rhodes seamlessly weaves together these two storylines, creating a captivating narrative that keeps readers on the edge of their seats. The main characters are well-developed and relatable, with their own unique strengths and flaws.

The setting is richly imagined and evocative, drawing readers in with its intricate details and vivid descriptions. One of the strengths of A Book of Spirits and Thieves is its exploration of the themes of power, identity, and family.

Rhodes delves into these themes with sensitivity and nuance, creating complex characters who grapple with these issues in their own unique ways. The novel also has a strong sense of historical and cultural significance, drawing inspiration from ancient mythology and legends.

On the other hand, the book suffers from some pacing issues, with certain parts of the story feeling rushed or underdeveloped. Additionally, some of the plot twists feel predictable or contrived, with the narrative relying too heavily on cliches and stereotypes.

Despite these flaws, A Book of Spirits and Thieves is a compelling read that will appeal to fans of fantasy and adventure. Its strong characterizations and vivid world-building make it a standout in its genre, and its thoughtful exploration of complex themes adds depth and sophistication to the story.

Readers who enjoyed Rhodes’ previous works will certainly find much to love in this new addition to her existing canon. Overall, A Book of Spirits and Thieves is a must-read for anyone looking for an exciting, thought-provoking, and thoroughly enjoyable fantasy novel.

Its themes of power, identity, and family resonate deeply with our current cultural moment, making it a timely and relevant addition to the genre. The Washington Post gives this book a strong recommendation and a rating of 4 out of 5 stars.
