Editoral Review

A Crucible of Souls is a fantasy novel written by Mitchell Hogan and published on July 1, 2013. The book is the first of the Sorcery Ascendant Sequence, a series of novels that follows the journey of a young boy trained in the art of sorcery.

Set in a world of magic, where sorcerers are the most powerful beings, the book introduces us to Caldan, a young orphan who has been trained in the ways of sorcery by a mysterious group of warriors. The story follows Caldan as he struggles to master his powers and navigate the complex politics of the sorcerer society.

Hogan’s writing style is descriptive and engaging, drawing the reader into the world of sorcery and magic. The book is fast-paced, with plenty of action and adventure to keep the reader engaged.

The characters are well-developed, with complex personalities and motivations that drive the plot forward.

One of the strengths of the book is its world-building. Hogan has created a rich and detailed world, with a history and culture that is both fascinating and believable.

The magic system is well thought out, and the rules of sorcery are clearly defined, which adds to the realism of the story.

The book also tackles themes of power, politics, and morality. The sorcerer society is a hierarchical one, with those at the top wielding immense power and influence.

Caldan must navigate this complex social structure, while also dealing with his own moral dilemmas. The book raises interesting questions about the nature of power and the responsibilities that come with it.

However, the book is not without its flaws. The plot can be predictable at times, with some of the twists and turns feeling a bit contrived.

The pacing can also be uneven, with some parts of the book feeling rushed while others drag on.

Overall, A Crucible of Souls is a well-written and engaging fantasy novel. It is a great read for fans of the genre, and Hogan’s world-building and characters are sure to captivate readers.

While it may not be perfect, it is definitely worth picking up for anyone looking for a thrilling adventure in a world of magic and sorcery.
