About the Author

I am a fantasy novelist who, alongside Tracy Hickman, co-created the game world of Dragonlance. Throughout my career, I have penned a variety of novels and short stories set in Krynn, as well as in other original worlds such as Darksword, Rose of the Prophet, Star of the Guardians, DeathGate, Dragonvarld, Sovereign Stone, Dragonships, and the Dragon Brigade.

In collaboration with my daughter, Elizabeth Baldwin, I also wrote two paranormal romance novels, titled Fallen Angel and Warrior Angel.

After graduating from the University of Missouri-Columbia, I settled in Wisconsin with my four dogs: Max, Dixie, Joey the Thug, and Clancy the Hooligan. Currently, I am hard at work on the third book in the Dragon Brigade series, the Seventh Sigil.

The first two books in the series, Shadow Raiders and Storm Riders, have already been released.

When I’m not writing, my hobby is flyball racing with my three furry friends: Dixie, a border collie, and my two Shelties, Joey the Thug and Clancy the Hooligan.

I am also the proud owner of a company that publishes RPGs. Our latest project involves creating an RPG for the beloved TV series, Firefly. Exciting times ahead!

Editoral Review

Margaret Weis is a prolific author of fantasy novels who has co-written many of the most popular books in the genre. One of her solo works, Amber and Ashes, is a dark, captivating tale that blends elements of classical mythology with futuristic technology.

Published on August 1, 2004, the book explores the themes of identity, rebellion, and redemption through the eyes of a fierce warrior named Mina. The story takes place in a post-apocalyptic world called Taladas where the gods have abandoned their creation and left mortals to fend for themselves.

The society is divided into two factions: the powerful wizards who rule over the masses and the rebels who seek to overthrow them. Mina, a skilled fighter from a humble background, finds herself caught in the middle of this conflict when she is arrested on false charges and sent to a prison camp.

Despite the brutality of her captivity, Mina refuses to submit to her captors and begins to plot her escape. Along the way, she encounters a motley crew of characters who are also fighting for freedom and together they embark on a perilous journey that will test their strength, courage, and loyalty.

Weis has created a rich and complex world filled with vivid landscapes, intricate mythology, and well-drawn characters. Her prose is lyrical and visceral, evoking a sense of tangible history and culture that adds depth and nuance to the narrative.

The plot moves at a fast pace, keeping the reader engaged and invested in the outcome of Minas quest. One of the greatest strengths of the book is its central character, Mina.

She is a fierce, independent, and complex heroine who defies stereotypical gender roles and avenues. Her journey of self-discovery and redemption is both engaging and inspiring, making her one of the most memorable characters in modern fantasy literature.

Another notable aspect of the book is how it explores themes of power, oppression, and resistance, with clear parallels to historical and contemporary political issues. Weis does not shy away from the gritty realities of captivity and torture, and her portrayal of the effects of trauma and resilience are both poignant and realistic.

There are a few minor weaknesses in the book, mainly related to some uneven pacing and minor plot inconsistencies, but these do not detract from the overall enjoyment of the story. Weiss mastery of her craft makes Amber and Ashes an engaging and thought-provoking read that will satisfy fans of fantasy, adventure, and mythology alike.

In conclusion, if youre looking for a captivating and immersive read that explores deep themes of power, identity, and rebellion, Margaret Weiss Amber and Ashes is a top-notch choice. The book is well-crafted, well-paced and contains enough twists and turns to keep readers on the edge of their seats.

The characters are well-drawn, the world-building is detailed and the narrative is deeply engaging. For all these reasons, the book is highly recommended for anyone interested in the fantasy genre or looking for a captivating and reflective read.
