Editoral Review

The Haunted Hotel: A Mystery of Modern Venice by Wilkie Collins is a classic suspense novel that was first published in 1879. Collins was a prominent British author, best known for his mystery and detective fiction.

The Haunted Hotel is set in Venice and revolves around a sinister hotel that is rumored to be haunted by the ghost of its previous owner. The novel features a cast of intriguing characters, including Lady Montbarry, the widow of the hotel’s owner, her husband’s charismatic best friend, and a cunning detective who is determined to solve the mystery.

The plot unfolds with a series of twists and turns that keep the reader guessing until the very end. Collins’ writing style is characterized by his rich and descriptive prose, which vividly brings the setting and characters to life.

He also employs a non-linear narrative structure, which adds to the novel’s suspense and intrigue. The Haunted Hotel is particularly significant for its cultural and historical context.

Set in Venice during the late 19th century, the novel captures the decadence and glamour of the era, while also exposing the darker sides of human nature. It also reflects the anxieties of the time, particularly the fear of the unknown and the supernatural.

In terms of its strengths, The Haunted Hotel is a masterclass in suspense and intrigue. Collins skillfully weaves together multiple plotlines and subplots to create a complex and engaging story.

The characters are well-drawn and multi-dimensional, with their motives and actions kept shrouded in mystery until the very end. Collins also does an excellent job of creating a haunting and otherworldly atmosphere, which adds to the novel’s sense of dread and unease.

However, the novel does have a few weaknesses. The pacing can be slow at times, particularly in the first half of the book.

Some of the characters can also feel underdeveloped or cliched, particularly the male characters, who are often defined by their romantic and sexual relationships with the female characters. Overall, The Haunted Hotel is a compelling and engaging read that is sure to delight fans of suspense and mystery fiction.

It is a testament to Collins’ skill as a writer and his ability to craft a complex and engaging story that still resonates with readers over 140 years after it was first published. Rating: 4/5 stars

Recommendation: Fans of classic suspense and mystery should definitely give The Haunted Hotel a read.

Its compelling characters, richly-drawn atmosphere, and intricate plot make it a must-read for anyone who loves a good mystery.
