Editoral Review

Broken Soul by Faith Hunter is a gripping urban fantasy thriller that will take readers on a roller coaster ride of emotions. Faith Hunter is a New York Times bestselling author and is known for her popular Jane Yellowrock series.

Broken Soul is the eighth book in this series and was first published on October 7, 2014. The Jane Yellowrock series follows the story of a skinwalker, Jane, who has the ability to shift into any creature she desires.

She works as a supernatural bounty hunter and is always in the middle of some dangerous supernatural intrigue. Broken Soul is no exception, as Jane is drawn into a web of dark magic, mystery, and betrayal.

The novel is set in modern-day New Orleans, a city steeped in history and known for its supernatural inhabitants. Hunter captures the essence of this city and its people perfectly, bringing it to life through her vivid and descriptive writing.

The plot revolves around Jane’s quest to stop a powerful witch who is using dark magic to control the city’s supernatural population. Hunter’s writing is of the highest caliber, and she has a talent for creating complex and nuanced characters.

Jane Yellowrock is a formidable protagonist, and readers will be rooting for her through every twist and turn of the plot. The supporting characters are equally well-crafted, and Hunter does an excellent job of developing their individual personalities and motivations.

The pacing of the novel is excellent, and the plot unfolds at a steady pace. Hunter takes her time to build tension and suspense, and readers will be kept on the edge of their seats throughout the book.

The themes of identity, relationships, and power are explored in-depth, and Hunter uses her characters to explore these ideas in a nuanced and thought-provoking way. One of the strengths of this novel is its attention to detail.

Hunter has obviously put a lot of research into New Orleans and its supernatural history. She incorporates this into the novel seamlessly, creating an immersive and realistic world for her characters to inhabit.

However, Broken Soul is not without its flaws. The novel can be a bit dense at times, and readers may find themselves struggling to keep up with the complex world-building and magic systems.

Additionally, new readers to the series may struggle to understand the complex relationships between the characters. Overall, Broken Soul is a fantastic addition to the Jane Yellowrock series.

Fans of urban fantasy will find much to love in this novel. It is well-written, well-paced, and full of complex and nuanced characters.

While it may not be the easiest novel to get into, those who take the time to delve into this world will be richly rewarded. Rating: 4.5/5

Recommendation: Fans of urban fantasy and supernatural thrillers will love this novel.

It is well-written, well-paced, and full of complex characters and relationships. However, new readers to the series may struggle to understand the complex world-building and magic systems.
