Editoral Review

Covet, a young adult novel by Melissa Darnell, was first published on September 25, 2012. The book falls under the urban fantasy and paranormal romance genre and is the first installment in the author’s series titled The Clann.

Covet takes place in a small town in Texas, where humans and Clanns (vampires) coexist in secret. The story follows sixteen-year-old Savannah Colbert, who’s struggling to come to terms with her newfound powers as a witch.

As she tries to navigate her identity, she finds herself drawn to Tristan Coleman, a member of the powerful Clann family, who’s sworn to protect his kind at all costs. Their forbidden love is complicated by their families’ history and the dangerous political climate of their kind.

Darnell’s writing style is engaging and easy to follow, making Covet a quick and enjoyable read. The book’s strength lies in its world-building, where she creates a society that’s both familiar and unique.

She blends vampires, witches, and humans, all while introducing her own rules and mythology, making it a fresh take on the paranormal genre. However, the book’s characters are not as well developed as one would expect.

Savannah comes across as a typical teenage girl who’s trying to fit in, while Tristan comes across as brooding and mysterious. Their chemistry feels forced and lacks depth, making their relationship feel unconvincing.

Furthermore, the book’s pacing is slow at times, with the story becoming predictable. Some twists and turns that could’ve added more excitement to the plot seem diluted due to predictability.

For readers who love teenage paranormal romance, Covet is a significant pick. Although it falls short in some aspects, the book’s compelling world-building and intriguing premise make it an entertaining read.

It would be a perfect fit for readers who enjoyed Twilight and The Mortal Instruments series. The book receives a rating of three out of five stars.
