Editoral Review

In her debut novel, Do You Dream of Terra-Two?, Temi Oh delivers a thought-provoking and emotionally charged story that melds together themes of space exploration, human relationships, and societal pressures. Oh, a Nigerian-British writer, offers a unique take in the science fiction genre, combining engaging plot elements and well-developed characters to create a captivating read.

The book follows a team of six young astronauts, affectionately known as the “Long-Termers,” who are tasked with embarking on a 23-year-long mission to colonize Terra-Two, an earth-like planet discovered outside of our solar system. As they prepare to leave Earth and their loved ones behind, each character faces their own battles with identity, purpose, and the formidable reality of being stranded in space for decades.

Oh’s writing is both descriptive and poetic, bringing to life the awe-inspiring vastness of space, as well as the intense emotions of the characters. The book’s pacing is well-planned, with tension building up as they journey through space, encountering unexpected obstacles and dangers along the way.

One of the book’s strengths is the depth of the characters, each with their distinct personality, backstory, and struggles. Oh offers insights into their fears, hopes, and desires, creating complex protagonists that are relatable and easy to empathize with, despite the otherworldly setting.

Do You Dream of Terra-Two? is, at its core, a tale of human nature and the struggles we face in our search for meaning and belonging.

Oh touches on deeper social issues, including the pressure of parental expectations, racial bias, mental illness, and more, giving the book a timely relevance in today’s world. While the book’s ending may feel anticlimactic for some readers, the overall journey is well worth the read.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys thought-provoking science fiction, stories about human connection and growth, and those interested in the intersection of societal pressures and identity.

Overall, Temi Oh’s Do You Dream of Terra-Two?

is a beautifully written and compelling debut novel that raises pertinent questions about our place in the universe and the human condition. The Washington Post gives this book a resounding endorsement for its lyrical prose, expert character development, and socially relevant themes that will stay with readers long after they turn the final page.
