Editoral Review

Elements of Chemistry: Heat by Penny Reid is an intriguing novel that follows the love story of two polar opposite characters, Kaitlyn Parker and Martin Sandeke. This romantic comedy is the second book in the three-part series, Elements of Chemistry.

Penned by the popular author, Penny Reid, this book was first published on April 24, 2015, and is an absolute page-turner for readers who enjoy the romance genre with a hint of humor and science. The story begins with Kaitlyn, a nerdy and introverted student in college, who accidentally meets Martin, the handsome and outgoing football team captain.

Despite their differences, a story unfolds where they gradually develop feelings for each other. Martin, who is not used to being rejected and has no clue how to formulate a connection with Kaitlyn, turns to science, taking help from his friend’s blog, Mona’s blog who happens to be Kaitlyn’s roommate.

Through various witty and humorous incidents, the two gradually move closer and form a relationship which is both complicated and heartwarming. The novel presents themes of love, friendship, acceptance, self-discovery and never giving up, which resonate deeply with readers.

The authors style is crisp and engaging, and her characterization of Kaitlyn and Martin is flawless. The plots pacing is uniform, and the romantic chemistry between Kaitlyn and Martin has the readers turning the pages, rooting for them.

The slow-burning romance that develops throughout the book is so well-written that it comes off almost as a science project with detailed calculations. While the first novel of the series perfectly captures the passion and angst of the early stages of love, this book explores the depths of a romantic-relationship.

Kaitlyns character, although somewhat unconventional for a romance novel, makes her relatable and unique. Martins alpha-male personality, on the other hand, balances the overall personality of the story beautifully.

Although there are no major twists, the storyline is well-crafted, and there is never a dull moment. Similarly, the author does not focus on the external conflicts between the characters, instead focusing on their inner thoughts, which make the story feel genuine.

The author also interweaves science throughout the novel, occupying a central role that makes it entertaining and educational. Reid’s fusion of science and romance themes provides readers with a fresh and engaging way to envisage how a romantic connection is formed.

While the book may not be everyone’s cup of tea, it can be considered a mellifluous change from the clichd boy-meets-girl romance stories. The writing style is enjoyable, and the characters are dynamic, making it a pleasurable read.

The book’s brilliance comes from both the authors ability to inject humor and science while seamlessly incorporating core themes of acceptance and compassion. Overall, Elements of Chemistry: Heat by Penny Reid, is a delightful book that will appeal to readers who enjoy romance and science.

It is an appropriate read for young adults and adults alike. This romance novel has all the elements of a good read and is an exceptional way to break away from the rigors of everyday life.

I would rate this book a solid 4 out of 5 stars, and I confidently recommend it to anyone looking for a lighthearted and informative book that will keep them amused and engrossed until the very last page.
