Editoral Review

Eon by Alison Goodman is a thrilling adventure novel that seamlessly blends elements of fantasy and historical fiction. First published in 2008, the novel has garnered a loyal following and critical acclaim.

Alison Goodman is an Australian author who is known for her works of fiction that merge different genres to create new and exciting stories. Eon is set in a fantasy world that is inspired by medieval China.

The story follows Eon, a sixteen-year-old girl who is masquerading as a boy in order to compete in a rigorous training program that selects a Dragoneye, a powerful dragon lord. The stakes are high, as the Dragoneye has the ability to manipulate the elements and has immense power that can make or break empires.

One aspect of the book that stands out is the world-building. Goodman has created a richly detailed world that is steeped in cultural traditions, mythology, and politics.

The story is set in a time of political upheaval, and the tensions between the different factions create a sense of palpable danger and intrigue. Eon is a complex and multifaceted protagonist, and the supporting characters are equally well-drawn.

Goodman has crafted a diverse cast of characters who all have their own motivations and secrets. The relationships between the characters are nuanced and authentic, and the careful attention to character development makes the emotional stakes of the story feel real.

The pacing of the story is excellent, with the tension escalating as Eon’s secrets are revealed and the competition becomes increasingly cutthroat. The themes of identity, power, and loyalty are explored in depth, and Goodman’s writing is engaging and vivid.

The novel is not without its flaws, however. The plot is at times convoluted, and the world-building can be overwhelming for readers who are not familiar with Chinese mythology.

Additionally, the novel leaves some unanswered questions, which may leave some readers feeling unsatisfied. Despite these limitations, Eon is a thrilling and engaging read that will captivate fans of fantasy and historical fiction.

The book is well-written and well-researched, and Alison Goodman’s talent for storytelling is evident on every page. I strongly recommend Eon to anyone who is looking for a fresh and exciting take on the fantasy genre.

Rating: 4/5 stars.
