Editoral Review

Isle of Night by author Veronica Wolff is a young adult novel that takes the reader on a thrilling journey filled with danger, romance, and supernatural elements. Published on September 6, 2011, it is the first book in the four-book Watchers series.

The novel stands out in its approach to the supernatural genre, as it features young adult protagonists, who are trained to become vampire hunters. The plot follows a young orphan girl named Annelise Drew, who is recruited to attend the mysterious and exclusive Vladescu School for female vampire hunters on a remote island.

Along with other girls, she receives training to hone her fighting skills, but with a twist: One of them is chosen to be turned into a vampire on her eighteenth birthday. Throughout the book, Annalise must navigate her way through social and political maneuverings while fighting against her own internal conflicts, all while discovering the truth about the school and the vampire world.

Wolff’s writing style is imaginative and intricate; she creates a world that is both fantastical and grounded. The pacing is brisk and intense, as the book moves from one high-stakes conflict to another, keeping the reader engaged and on the edge of their seat until the very last page.

One of the strengths of Isle of Night is its complex and relatable characters. Annelise Drew is a strong and flawed protagonist who is easy to root for, and her fellow students are just as intriguing.

The relationships between the girls are nuanced and realistic, and the romantic subplot is both satisfying and believable. However, there are some limitations to the book.

The novel’s depiction of vampires can feel clichĂ© at times, and there are certain plot points that feel underdeveloped or predictable. Additionally, some readers may find the multiple points of view distracting, as the book switches between various characters’ perspectives.

Despite these flaws, Isle of Night is an impressive debut novel, and the strengths of Wolff’s writing and characterization outweigh the weaknesses. In conclusion, I would highly recommend Isle of Night to young adult readers who enjoy supernatural fiction with a dash of romance and adventure.

The novel is well-written, action-packed, and filled with memorable characters. While it may not reinvent the vampire genre, it certainly stands out as an exciting and entertaining addition to it.

I would rate Isle of Night 4 out of 5 stars, for its strong characters, page-turning plot, and unique approach to the genre.
