Editoral Review

Holy Island by L.J. Ross is a thrilling mystery novel that takes readers on a harrowing journey through the rugged landscapes and treacherous waters of the UK’s northeastern coastline. Ross is a British author who has gained significant popularity for her DCI Ryan series of mystery novels.

Holy Island is the first book in the series and was originally published on January 1, 2015. The book belongs to the crime/mystery/thriller genre and explores themes such as murder, betrayal, revenge, and redemption.

The plot of Holy Island revolves around the investigation of a murder on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne. The victim is a young woman who was found dead in a chapel with strange symbols painted around her body.

DCI Ryan, a young and ambitious detective, is assigned to the case, and he soon realizes that the murder is just the beginning of a series of horrific crimes that threaten to tear the peaceful island apart. Ross’s writing style is crisp, vivid, and engaging.

She uses descriptive language to create a sense of place and atmosphere that immerses readers in the story. The characters are well-developed, and the pacing is just right, keeping the tension and suspense high throughout the book.

One of the strengths of the novel is the way Ross intertwines history and folklore into the storyline, adding layers of richness and depth to the plot. However, the book has its limitations as well.

Some readers might find the plot predictable, and the ending somewhat anticlimactic. Additionally, some of the secondary characters could have been more fleshed out.

Nevertheless, these shortcomings do not detract from the overall quality of the book, and Ross’s style and storytelling are enough to keep readers engaged until the very end. In terms of its significance, Holy Island provides an intriguing glimpse into British history and culture, particularly the myths and legends that have shaped the country’s identity.

It also touches on contemporary issues such as the rise of nationalism, the refugee crisis, and the social and economic inequalities that plague modern society. Overall, Holy Island is a compelling read for fans of mystery and crime fiction.

It has all the elements of a great thriller: a gripping plot, well-drawn characters, and plenty of twists and turns to keep readers guessing. The book is a must-read for anyone who enjoys a good whodunit, and Ross’s DCI Ryan series is sure to become a favorite among mystery lovers worldwide.

The Washington Post recommends this book and would score it 4 out of 5.
