Overview

Dave Barry, the Pulitzer Prize-winning humorist, takes us on a hilarious journey through the confusing terrain of adulthood in his book, “I’ll Mature When I’m Dead.” In his signature style, Dave explores the trials and tribulations of fatherhood, self-image, gender battles, celebrity culture, technology, and parenting styles. He even delves into topics that are often considered taboo, like certain medical procedures (“There’s nothing to be afraid of a vasectomy, except THEY CUT A HOLE IN YOUR SCROTUM.”).

With brand-new pieces that are as warm and funny as they are insightful, Dave offers readers a delightful look at the ups and downs of growing up. This book is a must-read for anyone who has ever wondered what it truly means to be an adult.

About the Author

Meet Dave Barry, a renowned humor writer who has been syndicated in over 500 newspapers in the US and abroad for 25 years. In 1988, he received the Pulitzer Prize for Commentary – an achievement that still leaves many scratching their heads.

Dave has authored several books, although they offer little practical knowledge. Interestingly, two of his books were even adapted into the CBS TV sitcom “Dave’s World,” featuring Harry Anderson as a much taller version of Dave.

In addition to writing, Dave also plays lead guitar for an unconventional literary rock band called the Rock Bottom Remainders, alongside a few other members. Although their musical ability is questionable, they are undeniably loud.

Dave has also made appearances on several TV shows, including one on the David Letterman show where he set fire to a pair of men’s underpants using only a Barbie doll.

When he’s not writing or performing, Dave is running for President of the United States. If elected, his top priority would be to bring to justice whoever is responsible for forcing Americans to use low-flow toilets.

Dave currently resides in Miami, Florida, with his wife Michelle, who is a sportswriter. He has two children, Rob and Sophie, though neither of them find him particularly amusing.

Editoral Review

In “I’ll Mature When I’m Dead: Dave Barry’s Amazing Tales of Adulthood,” bestselling humorist Dave Barry delivers his trademark wit and hilarious reflections on the difficulty of growing up. This collection of essays covers a wide range of topics, from parenting and marriage to technology and aging, all seen through the lens of Barry’s irreverent humor.

Barry is a seasoned writer, having penned numerous books and articles for publications such as the Miami Herald and the New York Times. He is known for his unique brand of satire and observational comedy, which has earned him a loyal following of fans.

In this book, Barry takes a humorous look at the trials and tribulations of adulthood. He shares anecdotes from his own life, as well as those of his friends and family, that are sure to leave readers laughing out loud.

Through his witty observations, he exposes the absurdities of modern life and offers a refreshing perspective on the challenges of growing up. One of the strengths of “I’ll Mature When I’m Dead” is Barry’s ability to tackle serious topics with humor and heart.

He addresses difficult subjects such as death and disappointment with sensitivity and compassion, while still managing to find the humor in even the most trying situations. Another highlight of the book is Barry’s ability to capture the spirit of his generation.

He skewers the excesses of the ’80s and ’90s, while also offering a poignant reflection on the changes that have taken place since then. The book provides a compelling snapshot of American culture during the late 20th century, and offers insights into the challenges and joys of growing up during that time.

However, the book is not without its flaws. While Barry’s humor is often spot-on, at times it can feel repetitive or forced.

Some of the jokes and observations can also feel dated or out of touch, making the book less relatable to younger readers. Despite these limitations, “I’ll Mature When I’m Dead” is a highly enjoyable read that will appeal to fans of Dave Barry’s unique brand of humor.

It is a witty, insightful commentary on the challenges of growing up and the absurdities of modern life, and is sure to leave readers laughing and smiling. Overall, I would highly recommend “I’ll Mature When I’m Dead” to anyone in need of a good laugh.

While it may not be for everyone, for those who appreciate Barry’s style of humor, this book is a true gem. I would give it a 4 out of 5 stars.
