About the Author
At the age of ten, Julia Alvarez left the Dominican Republic for the United States. She has since become a prolific author, writing six novels, three books of nonfiction, three collections of poetry, and eleven books for children and young adults.
Alvarez has also been a mentor to writers in schools and communities across America, and previously served as a writer-in-residence at Middlebury College before retiring in 2016. Her work has earned her numerous accolades, including a Latina Leader Award in Literature from the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute, the Hispanic Heritage Award in Literature, and the Woman of the Year title by Latina magazine.
Additionally, Alvarez’s work was featured in the New York Public Library’s program “The Hand of the Poet: Original Manuscripts by 100 Masters, from John Donne to Julia Alvarez.” One of her most well-known works, In the Time of the Butterflies, has sold over one million copies and was selected for the National Endowment for the Arts’ national Big Read program. In 2013, President Obama awarded Alvarez the National Medal of Arts in recognition of her exceptional storytelling abilities.
