But when Pearl discovers the truth about her past, she is forced to choose between her loyalty to her adoptive family and her destiny as a princess.

Editoral Review

Midnight Pearls by Debbie Viguié is a retelling of the classic fairy tale, The Little Mermaid. Viguié is an American author who has written over 50 novels, including young adult and adult fiction, as well as romance novels.

Her books are known for their strong female characters and supernatural elements. The novel is set in the coastal town of Inverness, Scotland, in the mid-18th century.

The story follows the life of a young mermaid named Pearl. She is the daughter of the ruler of the sea, King Triton, and is fascinated by the human world above.

One day, Pearl rescues a young man named James from drowning and falls in love with him. Pearl makes a deal with a sea-witch, agreeing to trade her voice for legs, in order to be with James.

But the sea-witch also warns Pearl that if she fails to win James’ love, she will turn back into a mermaid and become the sea-witch’s prisoner forever. The main conflict in the novel is the struggle between Pearl’s desire to be with James and the obstacles that prevent their love from being realized.

The story is filled with themes of love, sacrifice, and the consequences of making deals with the devil.

One of the strengths of Midnight Pearls is the vivid imagery and setting.

Viguié’s descriptions of the sea and its creatures are rich and atmospheric, transporting the reader to the world of the mermaids. The characters are also well-developed, particularly Pearl, who is a strong and determined protagonist.

However, the pacing of the novel can be slow at times, and the plot structure is predictable. The use of a well-known fairy tale is also somewhat limiting, as readers may feel that they already know the story.

Despite these limitations, Midnight Pearls is a beautifully written fairy tale with a modern twist. It will appeal to fans of young adult romance and fantasy novels.

With its themes of self-discovery and the power of love, the novel has relevance for readers of all ages.

Overall, I would give Midnight Pearls a rating of 3.5 out of 5 stars.

While it has some flaws, it is a well-written novel that will enchant readers who enjoy retellings of classic tales.
