Editoral Review

Robyn Carr’s My Kind of Christmas, published in 2012, is a heartwarming addition to the romance genre. Known for her bestselling Virgin River and Thunder Point series, Carr has written over 50 novels in her career.

My Kind of Christmas is a standalone holiday-themed novel that showcases Carr’s ability to create relatable characters and cozy small-town settings. The novel is set in a small mountain town called Virgin River, where we meet a charming cast of characters who are all hoping for a Christmas miracle.

The main protagonist, Angie LaCroix, is a former Hollywood starlet who leaves her fast-paced and shallow LA lifestyle behind to start anew in Virgin River. Although she’s determined to make a fresh start, a chance encounter with Patrick Ricado, a handsome widowed Marine, complicates things.

Angie and Patrick’s whirlwind romance is well-written, but what sets this novel apart is Carr’s attention to detail in all of the character’s backstories. Another standout character is Angies teenage son, John “Preacher” Middleton, who is dealing with profound loss as he grieves the death of his father.

The supporting cast is just as compelling, adding to the richness of the story. Carr’s writing is emotive and sensory, and the descriptions of the snow-covered town and the holidays create a picturesque setting.

The pacing is well-structured, with each subplot resolved at just the right time. Although the novel has no political or social commentary, it accurately portrays the American holiday spirit that celebrates hope, love, and the spirit of giving.

The book explores topics such as love, overcoming grief, and self-discovery. While it doesn’t break from the usual conventions of the genre, what makes it a standout is the heart and realism that is evident in the characters.

If there are any flaws in the novel, it is that some of the subplots are predictable and formulaic. However, for a holiday-themed romance novel, that is hardly a surprise.

Overall, My Kind of Christmas is a delightful novel that is perfect for anyone who loves a good old-fashioned romance. Whether you’re an existing fan of Robyn Carr or a newcomer to her work, this novel is sure to get you in the holiday spirit.
