Editoral Review

Origin by Jennifer L. Armentrout is a thrilling addition to the young adult sci-fi genre.

Armentrout is a prolific writer, having published over 50 novels, and has a penchant for crafting engaging stories that capture the imagination. Origin was first published on August 27, 2013, and remains a popular choice for fans of the genre.

The book follows the story of Katy, a 17-year-old girl who moves to a small town in West Virginia with her mother. Katy is an avid book blogger and becomes fast friends with her neighbor, Daemon, and his sister Dee.

Katy soon discovers that Daemon and Dee are aliens and that she has unwittingly stumbled into the middle of a dangerous intergalactic conflict. The plot is fast-paced, and the story keeps the reader engaged with its emphasis on action and suspense.

Armentrout’s writing style is easy to follow and engaging, and her use of humor adds levity to the tale. The authors character development is particularly noteworthy, with Katy evolving from a self-professed bookworm to a fierce fighter.

The relationship between Katy and Daemon also develops throughout the story and adds an extra dimension of romantic tension. The themes of loyalty, sacrifice, and finding ones place in the world are central to the plot.

Origin also explores the theme of the “other,” with the aliens struggling to fit in and be accepted in human society. In this regard, the book has some poignancy and relevance to current social debates.

One of the books weaknesses is its reliance on some YA tropes, such as the “love triangle” and the “chosen one” narrative. However, these tropes do not detract significantly from the overall quality of the story.

Jennifer L. Armentrout has a talent for world-building and creating characters that readers can genuinely invest in.

For fans of the sci-fi genre, Origin is an enjoyable read with engaging characters and a fast-paced plot. While not groundbreaking, the novel does provide a satisfying narrative experience.

I recommend this book for young adults and anyone looking for a gripping sci-fi adventure. On a scale of one to five, I would rate Origin a four, based on its engaging characters, exciting plot, and well-crafted themes.
