Queens of Geek by Jen Wilde: A Must-Read Book for Young Adults

Jen Wilde’s Queens of Geek is a young adult novel that takes readers into the world of fandom, social media, and identity. First published in March 2017, Queens of Geek has garnered critical acclaim for its diverse and relatable characters, thoughtful representation of mental health issues, and empowering messages.

Set at the SupaCon convention in Los Angeles, the novel follows three friends Taylor, Charlie, and Jamie as they navigate their way through the chaotic and exciting world of fandom. Taylor is an autistic girl with anxiety who is deeply immersed in the world of Queen Firestone, a popular fantasy series.

Charlie is a Chinese-Australian actress and YouTube star who has come to SupaCon to promote her first movie and to escape from a messy breakup. Jamie is Taylor’s best friend who is secretly in love with her but doesn’t want to ruin their friendship.

Together, they face a series of challenges, from coping with overwhelming crowds and hostile fans to confronting their own fears and insecurities. One of the strengths of Queens of Geek is its homage to geek culture and its celebration of diversity.

The novel is infused with references to various fandoms, from Doctor Who to Star Wars to Harry Potter, and it captures the thrill and passion of being a fan. Wilde also highlights the importance of representation and inclusion in fandom, as Taylor and Charlie confront issues of discrimination, sexism, and ableism.

By giving voice to characters who face these challenges, Wilde expands the scope of young adult literature and offers a platform for underrepresented groups. Another strength of Queens of Geek is its focus on mental health and self-acceptance.

Taylor’s autism and anxiety are portrayed with sensitivity and nuance, and Wilde avoids stereotypes and clichs. Taylor’s struggles with sensory overload, social interaction, and self-doubt are depicted with authenticity and empathy, and her journey towards self-acceptance and confidence is inspiring.

Similarly, Charlie’s struggle with public scrutiny and self-esteem is realistic and touching, and her realization that she doesn’t have to compromise her identity for fame is a powerful message. However, Queens of Geek also has some limitations.

The plot is predictable at times, with some clichd moments and coincidences. The pacing is also uneven, with some episodes dragging on while others feel rushed.

Additionally, some of the secondary characters are underdeveloped or stereotypical, such as Reese, the abusive ex-boyfriend, or Alyssa, the bullying cosplayer. Despite these flaws, Queens of Geek is a delightful and important contribution to the young adult genre.

Its heartfelt message of inclusivity, self-discovery, and empowerment is relevant to readers of all ages and backgrounds, and its engaging characters and vibrant setting will resonate with fans and non-fans alike. Jen Wilde’s writing is witty, energetic, and full of heart, and her ability to weave multiple storylines and perspectives is impressive.

Queens of Geek is a must-read book for anyone who loves fandom, friendship, and finding oneself.
