Editoral Review

Raze by Dakota Krout is a gripping epic fantasy novel that was published on July 26, 2019. Krout, who is also the author of the popular LitRPG series, The Divine Dungeon, has established himself as one of the leading voices in fantasy fiction.

Raze is a thrilling addition to his repertoire, overflowing with brilliant world-building, action-driven plot, and compelling characters with unique abilities. The novel takes place in a world where humans are born with unique fatal attributes that define their abilities and roles in society.

The protagonist, Tanner, is a Raze, a type of human that is capable of creating and manipulating fire. However, Tanner soon discovers that he is capable of wielding other fatal attributes, a revelation that puts him at odds with the corrupt and oppressive government.

Along with his allies, he embarks on a journey to challenge the status quo and bring about a revolution. Krout’s writing style in Raze is crisp, vivid, and cinematic.

His descriptions of the various characters’ fatal attributes, known as ‘Fatalism,’ are imaginative and well thought out. The world-building in Raze is exceptional, with Krout creating a complex and immersive universe inhabited by well-crafted characters.

The pacing of the plot is fast-paced, with plenty of action scenes to keep readers engrossed. However, Raze has some minor flaws.

Some of the characters lack depth and could have been developed more, particularly Tanner’s allies. Additionally, the romance angle felt contrived and unnecessary, and the ending could have been more impactful.

Nonetheless, these weaknesses offer valuable insights into what Krout can do better in his next novels. Overall, Raze is a must-read for fans of epic fantasy.

It is a well-executed debut that holds the potential for a fantastic series. The novel’s strong points far outweigh its weaknesses, and Krout demonstrates his prowess and creativity in storytelling beautifully.

Krout’s world-building and distinctively imaginative take on fatalism make Raze stand out from other books in the genre. In sum, Raze is an excellent book that will transport readers to a thrilling and immersive universe replete with intriguing characters, imaginative world-building, and action-packed plot.

It is a great book for fans of epic fantasy and for readers looking for a well-written, fast-paced adventure set in a world full of magic and intrigue. I highly recommend it.

I would give Raze four stars out of five.
