Editoral Review

Skye Jordan’s 2013 novel Reckless is a steamy romance that combines action, humor, and heart. This book centers around action-packed adventure and passionate romance.

Jordan’s writing style, with its minimal frills and direct storytelling, makes the novel a page-turner from beginning to end. Reckless takes place in the world of extreme sports, centered around the adventures of Kincaid Strange, a daredevil skier, and his crew, The Mountain Misfits.

Kincaid is the quintessential alpha male: handsome, charismatic, and incredibly talented. The novel introduces us to the woman that’s been by his side since childhood, unusual beauty and talented snowboarder Riley Smith.

Over the years of their friendship, this platonic relationship has developed into a simmering sexual tension. As Kincaid and Riley’s story unfolds, they face challenges both outside of their relationship and within it.

A brutal avalanche catches Kincaid in a life-or-death situation and forces Riley to confront her true feelings. In the aftermath, the two grapple with whether their friendship can survive the shift in intensity.

Jordan’s vivid descriptions of the mountainous terrain of Montana and the thrilling sports scenes create a sense of dynamic action that keeps the novel off-balance. At times, the action seems to overtake the romance, but Jordan reins it back in with intense moments between Kincaid and Riley.

While Jordan isn’t immune to typical romance novel stereotypes, she does temper them with moments of humor and self-awareness. Reckless isn’t a groundbreaking novel in the romance genre, but it’s an entertaining and engaging read.

One of its strengths is the unique setting and action scenes, which elevates it above typical romance fare. Jordan’s prose style is direct and suits the story well, with snappy dialogue and moments of humor breaking up the intense action.

However, there are moments where the story can seem formulaic and predictable, but Jordan’s skillful writing keeps the story moving at a good pace. Overall, for fans of romance novels with action-packed scenes and an empowered heroine, Reckless will be a satisfying read.

While it does fall prey to some genre tropes, Jordan’s writing and world-building keep the novel fresh and compelling. Anyone interested in starting a new series and delving into the world of extreme sports will find this novel a perfect entry point.

I give this book a rating of 4 out of 5 stars.
