About the Author

Mélanie Watt’s journey as an author and illustrator began in a design class taught by Michèle Lemieux at the University of Quebec in Montreal. Her first picture book, Leon the Chameleon, was published by Kids Can Press.

She went on to create several more books, including the Learning with Animals collection and Augustine, which received the ALA Notable Children’s Book award. Watt also illustrated Where Does a Tiger-Heron Spend the Night?

and Bearcub and Mama, which won the 2006 IRA Teachers’ Choices Project.

Her best-known book, Scaredy Squirrel, has won numerous awards, such as the Ruth and Sylvia Schwartz Children’s Book Award for Children’s Picture Book and the Amelia Frances Howard-Gibbon Illustrator’s Award. Scaredy Squirrel Makes a Friend was met with enthusiastic reviews and incredible sales, cementing Watt’s place as a rising star in children’s literature.

Chester, Chester’s Back!, and Chester’s Masterpiece follow the story of a megalomaniac cat who is the complete opposite of Scaredy. The books have become bestsellers and showcase the breadth and creativity of Watt’s work.

Scaredy returns in Scaredy Squirrel at the Beach and Scaredy Squirrel at Night, taking tentative steps out of his comfort zone.
