Editoral Review

Shifting Shadows by Patricia Briggs is a collection of short stories in the urban fantasy genre. Briggs, a popular author known for her Mercy Thompson series, creates a unique world where supernatural creatures coexist with humans.

The book was first published in September 2014 and has since been a New York Times bestseller. The stories in Shifting Shadows revolve around characters from different backgrounds and species, including werewolves, vampires, and fae.

The author explores the complexities of their relationships, their challenges, and their desires. The stories also touch on themes such as loneliness, power struggles, and loyalty.

In the opening story,”Silver”, the protagonist is a young werewolf named David who discovers an evil in his pack. In the story, Briggs skillfully creates suspense by throwing in some unexpected twists and turns.

The author delivers a character-driven narrative and takes readers on an emotional journey. One of my favorite stories in the collection is “Roses in Winter”.

The story revolves around Kara, a powerful fae with a tragic past. This story is a perfect balance of action, mystery, and romance.

Briggs creates an intriguing world where fae and humans try to find common ground. The story presents a powerful message on the importance of communication and understanding amidst conflict.

Although Briggs creates an intriguing world and characters, some stories in the collection felt like they lacked a central conflict. Nonetheless, she more than makes up for it with the execution of most of the other stories in the collection.

Shifting Shadows would appeal to urban fantasy enthusiasts, especially those who enjoy character-driven narratives. The book is a perfect addition to the Mercy Thompson series, and it adds an extra dimension to the universe Briggs has created.

Overall, it’s a solid collection of short stories that I highly recommend.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars.
