Editoral Review

Tethered to the World, a supernatural thriller by Stacey Brutger, was first published on June 19, 2019. The book would certainly appeal to fans of the genre, as well as those who enjoy well-crafted genre fiction with strong character development and vivid world-building.

Tethered to the World tells the story of Caroline, a nurse who is caught in the middle of a supernatural conflict when she discovers that she is a tethera rare and powerful individual who can connect the supernatural world with the natural one. As Caroline navigates this dangerous and mysterious new world, she encounters a diverse cast of characters, including vampires, demons, and werewolves, all from different factions contending for power and control.

One of the strengths of Tethered to the World is its vivid and imaginative world-building. Brutger conveys the intricate hierarchy and political landscape of the supernatural world with impressive attention to detail, and the creatures she introduces are both familiar and fresh.

Each faction is convincingly portrayed, with their own distinct motives and beliefs. The plot also moves at a brisk pace, with enough twists and turns to keep readers engaged.

However, some plot points feel contrived and are resolved too quickly, which detracts from the overall tension and drama. The character development in Tethered to the World is particularly strong.

Caroline is a relatable and sympathetic protagonist, and Brutger succeeds in fleshing out her motivations and beliefs. The supporting cast is equally intriguing, with each character adding depth and complexity to the novel.

There are also intriguing themes of power, control, and identity, which are woven throughout the novel. However, some readers may find the prose style to be inconsistent, particularly during the more action-packed sequences.

At times, the writing feels rushed and lacks the finesse of the quieter, more introspective moments. Additionally, some of the dialogue comes across as stilted, particularly when characters are engaging in exposition.

Overall, Tethered to the World is a solid addition to the supernatural thriller genre, with impressive world-building and strong character development. Although some of the prose and pacing could be improved, readers looking for an imaginative and compelling read will find much to enjoy here.

Washington Post rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars.
