Editoral Review

Jessie Janowitz’s The Doughnut Fix is a charming and heartwarming read that will delight middle-grade readers and foodies alike. Published on April 1, 2018, this book showcases Janowitzs captivating writing skills and impeccable attention to detail.

Eleven-year-old Tristan is uprooted from his beloved Brooklyn neighborhood when his parents move to small-town Petersville, where there is nothing but fields of grass and no place to get a decent doughnut. Determined to fix this, Tristan embarks on a journey to create the ultimate doughnut with his new friend, Josh.

But when the duo runs into more challenges than they expected, they need to think out-of-the-box to save their doughnut dream. Set in a cozy small-town atmosphere, the coming-of-age novel touches on themes such as family, friendship, and perseverance.

Janowitz’s writing is engaging and witty, making the reader feel part of the Petersville community. One of the book’s strengths is its character development.

Tristan is a relatable protagonist, and his quirky personality makes him a joy to read. His growth throughout the novel is both entertaining and heartening, making it easy for readers to root for him.

Janowitz also fleshes out the supporting characters, such as Josh and Tristan’s parents, giving readers a well-rounded cast. Another commendable thing about The Doughnut Fix is the vivid imagery used throughout the book, which transports readers to the charming town of Petersville.

The descriptions of the doughnut-making process are so meticulous that they might even make readers crave a sweet treat themselves. However, some may argue that the novel is predictable and formulaic.

It follows the typical format of a middle-grade novel, with a clear and linear plot. While this may be true, Janowitz executes the formula beautifully, resulting in a captivating and well-executed story.

In the grand scheme of things, The Doughnut Fix shines in its ability to deliver a heartwarming story about friendship and the importance of following one’s passions, making it a perfect read for middle-grade readers. The book’s references to the importance of community and small businesses are also timely and relevant to current events, making it a great conversation starter for young readers.

Overall, Jessie Janowitz’s The Doughnut Fix is a must-read for lovers of food and middle-grade fiction. It is an enjoyable and engaging book that will leave readers with a smile on their faces.

The Washington Post gives it a 4 out of 5 rating.
