Editoral Review

The Last by Hanna Jameson is a mesmerizing work of genre fiction that explores the depths of human nature in the face of catastrophe. Published on January 24th, 2019, Hanna Jameson is a critically-acclaimed author who has made a name for herself in the suspense and thriller genres.

The Last is a unique blend of post-apocalyptic fiction, mystery, and psychological drama. The book follows a group of strangers who are isolated in a remote hotel in Switzerland after a nuclear war wipes out most of the world’s population.

The Last takes place in the Hotel Schweizerhof, a luxurious Swiss hotel that quickly transforms into a refuge for the survivors of a global nuclear catastrophe. The novel follows Jon Keller, a historian who has arrived at the hotel for a conference, and his unexpected group of companions who band together to try and survive in the aftermath of the disaster.

With dwindling resources, no communication with the outside world, and suspicious deaths that seem to go beyond the destruction of the war, the guests at the hotel must confront the reality that they may be the last people on earth. As tensions rise and paranoia sets in, the group must work together to uncover the truth and stay alive.

Jameson has crafted a complex and multi-layered story that is both engaging and thought-provoking. The Last is a character-driven novel that explores the intricacies of human behaviour in extreme situations, examining how individuals are forced to confront their own mortality and the possibility of being alone in the world.

The characters in The Last are richly drawn and well-developed, with intricate backstories that add depth and complexity to the story. Moreover, the setting is vivid and immersive, with the oppressive isolation and claustrophobia of the hotel enhancing the sense of dread and uncertainty.

One of the strengths of The Last is Jameson’s ability to blend genres seamlessly. The novel combines elements of science fiction, horror, and mystery to create a unique and compelling narrative.

The book is undoubtedly a page-turner, with a tense and fast-paced plot that keeps the reader on the edge of their seat. Still, it also manages to explore deeper themes, such as the nature of humanity, morality, and survival.

Moreover, the book draws parallels to current events and offers a commentary on the instability of the world today, highlighting the fragility of our existence and the importance of community and human connection. Despite its many strengths, The Last does have some limitations.

The plot can be predictable at times, and some of the philosophical musings can feel heavy-handed. Still, the overall quality of the writing and the rich characterisation make up for these minor flaws.

Overall, The Last is a must-read book for fans of post-apocalyptic fiction, thrillers, and mystery novels. It is masterfully written, with evocative and lyrical prose that enhances the emotional impact of the story.

The Last is both an examination of the human psyche in the face of disaster and a thrilling, action-packed read that keeps you hooked until the very end. It is a unique and powerful book that will stay with you long after you have finished reading it.

Therefore, we highly recommend checking out The Last by Hanna Jameson.
