About the Author
James Oliver Rigney, Jr. wrote under the pen name Robert Jordan and is best known for his bestselling fantasy series, The Wheel of Time. He also wrote under the names Reagan O’Neal and Jackson O’Reilly.
Jordan was born in Charleston, South Carolina and served in Vietnam with the United States Army as a helicopter gunner. He was awarded several medals for his service.
Jordan attended The Citadel and earned an undergraduate degree in physics before working as a nuclear engineer for the United States Navy. He began writing in 1977 and enjoyed various hobbies such as hunting, fishing, and chess.
He identified as a “High Church” Episcopalian and was married to Harriet McDougal, who worked as a book editor. Jordan was a Freemason but chose not to advertise it due to negative propaganda against the group.
Jordan was diagnosed with cardiac amyloidosis in 2006 and began treatment at the Mayo Clinic. Despite his diagnosis, he remained optimistic about his future.
Unfortunately, Jordan passed away on September 16, 2007.
