Fans of Carlin will not be disappointed with this irreverent and thought-provoking read.

About the Author

George Denis Patrick Carlin was an American stand-up comedian, actor, author, and philosopher who won a Grammy for his comedic genius. He was known for his skill in delivering political and black humor, and for his witty observations on language, psychology, religion, and many other taboo subjects.

One of Carlin’s most famous comedy routines was the “Seven Dirty Words,” which led to a landmark 1978 U.S. Supreme Court case. The decision, made by a narrow 5-4 vote, affirmed the government’s right to regulate Carlin’s act on public airwaves.

In the mid-2000s, Carlin’s stand-up routines focused on exposing the flaws of modern-day America. He tackled contemporary political issues with satire, and criticized the excesses of American culture.

Carlin was a disciple of Lenny Bruce, and was ranked second on Comedy Central’s list of the top 10 stand-up comedians. He frequently performed and guest-hosted during Johnny Carson’s three-decade tenure on “The Tonight Show,” and was the show’s first-ever guest host.

Editoral Review

George Carlin, the iconic comedian and social critic, left readers with a final parting gift before he passed away in 2008. Published in 2004, When Will Jesus Bring the Pork Chops?

is a collection of essays and rants that showcase Carlin’s signature blend of irreverent humor and piercing cultural commentary. In this book, Carlin doesn’t hold back as he takes aim at a wide range of topics, from religion and politics to popular culture and language.

He weaves together personal anecdotes, historical references, and biting satire to create a kaleidoscopic portrait of American society. One of the strengths of the book is Carlin’s mastery of language.

He has a knack for taking common expressions and turning them on their head, revealing the absurdity of the way we communicate. For instance, he takes issue with the phrase “war on terror,” arguing that it’s an oxymoron since war is itself a form of terror.

Carlin’s irreverence is also on full display throughout the book. He skewers sacred cows of all kinds, from organized religion to patriotism to the self-help movement.

He’s not afraid to be provocative or offensive, but he always has a point to make beneath the surface. However, for all his wit and intelligence, there are moments when Carlin’s tirades begin to feel repetitive.

He tends to circle back to the same themes over and over again, such as his disdain for euphemisms and his frustration with the level of discourse in politics. Additionally, some readers might find Carlin’s tone to be overly confrontational or cynical.

While it’s clear that he cares deeply about the state of society, his delivery can sometimes come across as pessimistic or defeatist. Despite these limitations, When Will Jesus Bring the Pork Chops?

is a worthwhile read for anyone who appreciates sharp, witty commentary on current events. Carlin’s legacy as a cultural critic is well-deserved, and this book is a fitting tribute to his fearless and iconoclastic spirit.

Overall rating: 4 out of 5 stars.
