As Ulf’s settlement thrives, tensions with the native islanders escalate, culminating in a brutal murder that threatens to shatter the fragile peace. Eyvind must navigate his loyalty to his friend and his sense of justice as he discovers the true nature of Somerled’s ambitions.

Editoral Review

Juliet Marillier’s “Wolfskin” unfolds against a backdrop of ancient Norse mythology and folklore, showcasing her exceptional world-building skills and flair for character development. This historical fantasy novel, first published on June 1, 2003, revolves around the story of Eyvind, a boy who grows up to become a formidable warrior, and his companions as they embark on a perilous journey.

Marillier has previously won acclaim for her novels like “Daughter of the Forest” and “Son of the Shadows,” and “Wolfskin” is another gem to add to her impressive bibliography. Marillier’s writing is immersive, evocative, and richly detailed, resplendent with poetic imagery and nuanced characterization.

Marillier’s prose blends seamlessly into the fabric of Norse mythology, presenting a vivid yet authentic portrayal of the time period. Set during the Viking era, the story takes the reader on an epic journey from the snow-capped mountains to the fertile valleys of the Northern lands.

The main character, Eyvind, is a complex and relatable character whose struggles and challenges are brought to life with empathy and sensitivity. The themes of love, loyalty, betrayal, and self-discovery underpin the narrative, and Marillier deftly interweaves these threads to create a gripping and satisfying story.

The other characters in the book are equally well-developed, from Eyvind’s fellow warriors to the Norse gods themselves, each with their distinctive personalities and quirks. Marillier has a gift for fleshing out characters with enough detail to make them feel realistic, but without bogging the story down in too much exposition.

The pacing of the book is excellent, with Marillier building tension gradually before bringing the story to a thrilling conclusion. The plot structure is well-conceived and engaging, with several unexpected twists and turns to keep the reader guessing.

One of the strengths of “Wolfskin” is the author’s use of Norse mythology and folklore, which adds layers of depth and richness to the story. Marillier’s writing captures the essence of Old Norse society, and her attention to detail and historical accuracy is impressive.

If there is a weakness in the book, it is perhaps the occasionally slow pacing in the middle of the story. However, this is a minor quibble when one considers the overall quality of the book.

Overall, “Wolfskin” is a beautifully crafted, immersive, and satisfying story that will appeal to lovers of historical fiction, fantasy, and mythology. Marillier’s writing is excellent, and her world-building is first-rate.

This book comes highly recommended to anyone looking for a gripping, thoughtful, and insightful read. Rating: 4.5/5
