Editoral Review

In Kami Garcia’s novel, Dangerous Creatures, readers are introduced to Ethan Wate’s ex-girlfriend, Ridley Duchannes and her new boyfriend, the mysterious and dangerous Link. The book, published on May 20, 2014, is a spin-off to the Beautiful Creatures series and, like its predecessor, is a young adult urban fantasy novel complete with magic, supernatural creatures, and forbidden love.

Garcia, along with her co-author Margaret Stohl, has built a world that is easy to get lost in, bringing back fan-favorite characters while also introducing new ones. Ridley, the sassy and sultry Duchannes, known as the former Dark Caster, is back in town and has her sights set on her ex-boyfriend Link.

However, the novel quickly shows that things are never what they seem in the small southern town of Gatlin, and a world of danger and secrets starts to unravel. The plot of Dangerous Creatures is fast-paced, filled with unexpected twists and turns.

The authors have created a fascinating and complex storyline that keeps readers on the edge of their seats. Moreover, the world-building is incredibly detailed, making it easy for readers to get completely immersed in the world of Gatlin and its supernatural inhabitants.

In addition to the plot and world-building, the authors have done an excellent job of developing the main characters. Ridley and Link both have unique qualities, and the authors have given them distinct voices that bring their personalities to life.

The secondary characters are also well-crafted and play important roles in the story, keeping the plot moving and providing insight into the world and its history. One of the strengths of the book is the theme of redemption, which is threaded throughout the story.

Ridley’s past as a Dark Caster eventually catches up with her, and she discovers that redemption is not an easy path to walk. This theme is handled with both care and nuance, making it a powerful part of the story.

However, one of the weaknesses of the book is that readers who haven’t read the Beautiful Creatures series may feel a little lost at times. While the authors do provide some background information, those new to the world might struggle to keep up with some of the more intricate details.

In conclusion, Dangerous Creatures is a fast-paced and exciting addition to the urban fantasy genre. Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl have created a world that is vividly detailed, with a plot that is full of suspense and surprises.

The authors’ character development is exceptional, and the themes of redemption are powerful and thought-provoking. Although it is not without its flaws, Dangerous Creatures is definitely worth reading, especially for fans of the Beautiful Creatures series.

Recommended for fans of young adult urban fantasy novels, with a rating of 4 out of 5 stars.
