Editoral Review

Gail Giles novel What Happened to Cass McBride? is a compelling and thought-provoking read.

First published in 2006, the book tells the story of high school football star Kyle Kirby, who exacts a twisted revenge on his classmate Cass McBride after she rejects his advances via text message. The novel explores themes of bullying, revenge, and forgiveness, and raises important questions about the impact of technology on modern relationships.

Giles writing style is visceral and impactful, immersing readers in the minds of both the victim and the perpetrator of the crime. The novels structure, which alternates between chapters focused on Cass, Kyle, and their families, builds tension and keeps readers engaged throughout.

One of the novels greatest strengths is its character development. The main characters are well-rounded and complex, with believable motivations and flaws.

Cass is a sympathetic teen who is already grappling with the death of her mother, making Kyles act of violence all the more devastating. Kyle, meanwhile, is a troubled young man, whose own experiences with bullying and abuse have fueled his rage and need for control.

The novel also skillfully explores issues of class, race, and gender, with Cass and her family being portrayed as part of the working class, and Kyle and his family representing the wealthy elite of their small Texas town. Race is implicitly addressed through the fact that all of the major characters are white, while gender is a central theme, with Kyles sense of entitlement and toxic masculinity being called into question.

If there is a weakness in What Happened to Cass McBride?, it is perhaps in its pacing. The novel is relatively short, and some readers may wish for more time to fully explore the complex emotions and relationships of the characters.

Additionally, the ending may feel somewhat rushed, with the resolution coming quickly after the climax. Despite this, What Happened to Cass McBride?

is a powerful and important book that remains relevant in todays society. With the rise of social media and technology, the novels exploration of the dark side of modern relationships is more timely than ever.

Readers who enjoy thought-provoking, character-driven stories with themes of social justice and everyday heroism will find much to love in Giles novel. Overall, What Happened to Cass McBride?

is a must-read for teens and adults alike. With its gripping narrative and well-drawn characters, it is a book that will stay with readers long after the last page has been turned.

The Washington Post gives it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
